Because of the version mismatch described in my OP, which is also
apparent in the prebuilt release. And before you ask, the reason why I'm
consulting this mailing list instead of the vendor is because I expect
to get a more competent answer sooner this way - after all I suppose the
reason for my issue lies somewhere in the bowels of glibc or its
(auto)makefiles.
