The INSTALL file recommends using make-3.75 or 3.77. 3.77 (compiled
against glibc-2.0.102 at least) just segfaults. I'm now building
glibc-2.0.104 using make-3.76.1 from RedHat-5.2 distribution.

Workaround seems to be to recommend against make-3.77
