I know I promised to look into this a couple of months ago, but
have so far failed to find the time to do so. Looks like maybe
Aurelien is on the case now but, if not, someone poke me with a
larger stick and I'll see what I can do.

PS: Dave, would it help if I just forward-port the entire Debian
packaging to 2.18 trunk and start doing 2.18~pre uploads to
experimental, or are you looking to be able to test things
in an "as close to git as possible" way?
