OK, so I installed gcc 3.3.3.  Still no luck:

/home/src/glibc/build/elf/librtld.os(.text+0x4a4): In function `_dl_start':
/home/src/glibc/libc/elf/rtld.c:319: relocation truncated to fit: GPREL16 _rtld_local_ro

What did I miss this time?
