Ulrich,
On debian ppc sid we have autoconf 2.54. With the new autoconf 2.53
changes in glibc cvs, I can no longer run configure. I now get the
error...
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking for pwd... /bin/pwd
checking for powerpc-redhat-linux-gcc... no
checking for powerpc-redhat-linux-cc... no

checking for make... make
checking version of make... 3.79.1, ok
configure: error:
*** These critical programs are missing or too old: gcc
*** Check the INSTALL file for required versions.
This is with a gcc 3.2.1pre package installed which has been okay
up to now...
gcc version 3.2.1 20020924 (Debian prerelease)
I am seeing the same problem on a RedHat 8.0 based ppclinux machine.
