Sorry I was not clear enough.
That is what I did.

Namely, after installing binutils 2.10.0.26,
I ran
    make clean
    configure ...
    make check
and as I mentioned
    make check
ran to completion except for some of the known
problems in math test. (I simply re-ran make check
to skip over these known problems. They seem to have
more with missing functions rather than
the accuracy problems, though.)

Hope this clarifies what I did.
