glibc update problems

Hello,

Andreas Jaeger suggested that I post to you an account of the
problems I've had in updating from glibc 2.0.6 to 2.0.7.

I'm running Linux 2.0.33 on an IBM ThinkPad. My system began
life as Slackware but has been substantially updated. I've been
using version 2.0.6 of glibc for several months with no serious
problems, and have recompiled almost all of the programs on my
system against glibc. My glibc 2.0.6 was originally compiled
using gcc 2.8.0.

On two occasions over the last couple of months I've tried
updating to glibc 2.0.7. The first time I compiled 2.0.7pre3 on
my own machine, using gcc 2.8.0 or 2.8.1 (I didn't record which
at the time). After experiencing problems (described below) I
dropped back to 2.0.6. More recently I tried installing the
binary release of 2.0.7 from the RedHat 5.1 rpm.

Problems: After installing 2.0.7 (both times) several programs
stopped working, giving error messages "error loading shared
libraries" and "undefined symbol: __register_frame_info". The
programs included bash, X and ssh, all of which had been
compiled against glibc 2.0.6 using gcc 2.8.N.

I have now once again re-installed glibc 2.0.6 and the problems
have disappeared.
