Redhat Linux (Intel) 6.1 with all eratta fixes

The install and build had no problems. My application is 
compiled with the -ggdb switch (seems to work with standard
gdb). I start the insight gdb ("gdb application"). My code
is loaded (I see it in the window). I set a breakpoint near
the top of the application and click "run". The GUI hangs.
My application process appears to start, but I can only see
that via the "ps" command. I'm sure this is my ignorance. I'm
having a little challenge finding any documentation on 
"beginners usage of insight"......
