Where are `http client function' modules?

... as of this writing, one can find Emacs interfaces, database
access routines, compilers, GUI toolkit interfaces, and HTTP
client functions, among others.
I could sure use some http client functions (I'd like to be able to
retrieve financial data from a web site; I'm sure someone has already
written this) but I can't find anything relevant in
/usr/share/guile/1.3.4/ice-9/, or on
http://www.glug.org/projects/index.html, or by searching the web.
Anyone have a pointer to this sort of thing?
