Various stuff

Hi,

I haven't been around much the past two months because my work at
Eazel took more of my time than expected. I'm hoping to get back in
the swing of things.

I'm now trying to catch up on the email backlog. I've subscribed to
the list with my work address and set up the list to be filtered into
a separate folder, so I'm reading the list regularly again. Soon I
will try to coordinate a release roadmap at Guile. I am in Paris right
now for a conference (GUADEC) so it may still be slow for the next few
days.

I've also started the ball rolling on a way to have more energy put
into the maitainership of Guile. I will post more info as soon as
everything is finalized.

I also thought the Guile community might be interested in the feedback
various GNOME hackers gave me on Guile during the conference. In
addition to the typical complaints (startup time, taking over main,
docs), one commonly raised issue was the fact that the Guile API
changed in non-backward compatible ways between 1.3 and other 1.3.x
releases. After 1.4 is released, we should try to have 1.4.x releases
that contain only bug fixes and changes that are completely
backward-compatible at the Scheme and C levels. This may be a pain to
manage, but Guile is getting used widely enough now that we need to
consider the issue of providing a stable development platform.
