libreadline.so on Solaris?

I couldn't compile libreadline.so on Solaris, because it requires
libcurses.so (I think), but there is only libcurses.a. The configure
script gets confused if libreadline.a is present (i.e. it cannot
produce a shared object that is linked with -lreadline). What should I
do?
