Please think a little about those who don't necessarily have a tar that knows about xz. The world doesn't end with GNU/Linux.

These days, even FreeBSD is shipping their OS tar.xz (rsp. txz) packaged: c.f. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/9.0-RELEASE/
