Preparing for a GDB 4.17 release

Hi, I'm going to make a GDB 4.17 release soon. I will make a branch for
the release in about a week; we'll shoot for releasing it to the world
two weeks after that.

If you have patches that are ready to go in, but have not yet been
submitted, please send them in now. If you don't have your FSF copyright
assignment paperwork submitted and on-file at the FSF, we probably won't
have time to get significant contributions in for this release.

If you sent in a patch, but have not heard anything and the patch is not
in the latest snapshot (ftp.cygnus.com:/private/gdb/gdb-980122.tar.gz),
please send it in again. We have a backlog of patches which have not
yet been evaluated, so we'll be going over those for the next few days.
I'd rather have two copies of a patch than zero copies, so don't be shy.

I want to contact the various free OS groups (RedHat/Debian Linux,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc.) and make sure they aren't hoarding any GDB patches.
If you're with one of these groups (or know who is responsible for GDB
for any of these groups), please let me know. Ideally we'll have GDB
4.17 running out of the box on many of the free OSes without gratuitous
patching.

I'll send out another note when we've made the GDB 4.17 branch and have
a snapshot of it on-line. We'll be grateful for all the testing and
help you can provide to make another great GDB release.
