We have just found this is fixed in git master by commit
416675305692976aca45860e24b963982a2e682a ("Fix gdb segv when objfile can't be
opened"). Thanks to Mike Gulick who authored the patch!
I think gdb-8.1-branch might benefit from picking that commit.
