On Linux/x86, I got

[hjl@gnu-6 tmp]$ cat x.c
#include <stdio.h>

__thread int x;

int
main ()
{
  x = 0;
  printf ("%d\n", x);
  x = 1;
  printf ("%d\n", x);
  return 0;
}
[hjl@gnu-6 tmp]$ gcc -g x.c
[hjl@gnu-6 tmp]$ gdb a.out
