AIX 5.1 core file support was added to GDB after 5.2 was branched. A current gdb, which should work much better can be obtained via:
http://sources.redhat.com/gdb/current/
More than the attached patch was required so I'm not sure that the necessary changes will be pulled into 5.2 branch.
