I also don't think this discussion is going much of anywhere...

I'm done GDB hacking for today, but tomorrow I'm planning to come back
with a sample patch which uses out-of-tree expat and readline, and
makes it as easy as possible to build anyway.  Let's see if that makes
the situation clearer.
