DAVENPORT: using <parameter> for normal code variables?

Someone recently asked me if it's OK to use <parameter>x</parameter>
to talk about a variable x which is not a parameter to a function.

I realized that I've been using <parameter> that way too, but wondered
if there might be a more appropriate tag.

Any opinions?

                                      Cheers,
                                        norm
