I can't speak for Camille, obviously, but isn't the issue here simply
choosing different image formats for different output types?  (In
which case the answer is covered in the URL provided by Bob.)  For
example, if I have a company logo or a detailed diagram available in
PNG and EPS, I might choose to use PNG for HTML output, and EPS for
PDF.  (I know you know this---what am _I_ missing?  :-)

Yes that's it: PNG (bitmap) quality in printed material is not comparable to the vector based format quality.
