I typed it into the mail to demonstrate my problem (my actual XML is
valid) ;o)

On further investigation (and perhaps I should have started here - I got
carried away with searching the archives because I've seem reference to
the problem previously) there may be something happening in my
customisation layer - output from the vanilla ../fo/profile-docbook.xsl
gives me correct formatting of lists...
