Paul,

The named character references issue is actually a different problem
from what you mention in your original posting, right? I kind of think
the character reference issue is something that's solve-able at the
editing-application layer and IMHO doesn't require any of the solutions
that have been proposed.

I mean, if you're already using Emacs/nXML and/or Norm Walsh's "XML
Unicode" package, I think you've probably found that you've got a pretty
easy to use way to enter and view special characters while you're editing.
