I tried that and it did not work either. What I ended
up doing was copying in the actual
<xsl:template match="sect1">
and customizing that... maybe that is brute force, but
it worked.

I think the problem is the mode="article.recto.mode".
There is no such mode in the stylesheets, so your template
is never used. What happens if you omit the mode attribute?
