Re: redundant pages in index

/ Matthew Hobbs <mhobbs_of_lawson@bigpond.com> was heard to say:
| I produce PDF from DocBook XML using openjade and pdftex. I want to make an
| index and have finally managed to do this using collateindex.pl. However I
| am disappointed to find that my index turns out to have considerable
| redundancy . Indeed the collateindex.pl output warns that:
|
| Duplicates may be removed in the HTML backend, but in the print
| backends, it is impossible to suppress duplicate pages or coalesce
| sequences of pages into a range.
|
| Is there no way around this?

I recently implemented and described some workarounds for getting
properly collated page numbers out of FO. The same technique might work
for RTF...

I'm offline so I can't send a pointer. Basically you output markup
that contains the page numbers. So in pass 1, if you printed your
index it would look like it contained index markup. You extract that,
massage it, and reformat the document using that index.

                                        Be seeing you,
                                          norm
