Its a character set problem. I would guess the character set you are
using is an IBM terminal character set or the DOS character set or
whatever where your '?' were nice little corner or lines.
It's possible there's some standardized Unicode or some supported
character set equivalent, and you could convert the text screens using
that. You'd have to hunt around however.
