Well actually you can get it running, and with some customization to the
FO-
Stylesheets we was able to get a good result. But FOP and also XEP from
RenderX are not able to process large document. Both engines crash after
a while with some more or less stupid error messages.
Our User Manual got about 250 pages and lots of graphics. After a long
fight with FOP and XEP we gave the hole FO->PDF thing up. I thnik this
technology needs some more time to get ready for the normal users. So we
started to use OpenJade and the DSSSL-Stylesheets to create RTF and
converted it into PDF. Maybe you should also take a look at PassiveText
under http://users.ox.ac.uk/~rahtz/passivetex/. This is FO-Engine
relying
on xmltex.
