Hm, this works for me without any customization. I think it's a terminfo
thing.
In mintty, when you go to Options > Terminal, what does Type say? Mine is
xterm-256color. Try setting this to xterm or xterm-256color, then starting
a new screen session and see if that fixes it.
Within screen my $TERM is screen-256color, but I don't think that matters.
