Please re-read what I wrote.  What you are seeing here is the expected
result of *not* using a windows console but instead a pty, which to
javaw.exe will appear to be redirection to a pipe.  And again, since a
pipe does not involve a windows console in any way it is irrelevant.  If
you try the above from a windows console (this means CMD.EXE, no rxvt,
no xterm, no CYGWIN=tty) you get no output whatsoever from javaw.exe.

The distinction may not matter to you, but the default "Bash shell" that
Cygwin provides is precisely this, a stock windows console.
