That was an aside, anyway -- you are, of course, free to organize your
folders as you wish.

Hmm, did you mean 'Download' followed by 'Install'?

That's fair enough. So, your real problem is setup hogging up all the VM
while installing the alternatives package. Quite possibly a legitimate
bug -- we just need to figure out how to reproduce it, if you are to have
any hope of getting the bug fixed.

I doubt you'll have hundreds of error messages in the log from the new
snapshot of setup. What you're likely seeing is old messages from your
previous installation attempt, since messages are appended to setup.log
(unlike setup.log.full, which is overwritten on every run of setup).
You can try deleting /var/log/setup.log to get a completely fresh picture
of what setup is doing.

Well, it works just fine for me, so unless we can find out exactly what
makes your system different from mine, there isn't much chance that I (or
other setup developers) can reproduce your problem.
Also, please be specific: does it grind to a halt *while* running Cygiwn
setup, or *after* it has exited? If the latter, then it's very likely not
a problem with Cygwin setup.

This is possibly another bug. Do you have write permission to your
registry? Are you installing "Just for me", or "For everyone"? Please
attach setup.log.full that results from the 'Download' step, and then the
one that results from the 'Install' step (be careful as that file gets
overwritten every time -- you'll have to save it between runs).

No, certainly hogging up VM is not 'normal', but neither is it frequent,
or there would have been more complaints by now. Something on your system
tickles a bug in setup, or setup tickles a bug in whatever software you
have on your system...
You mentioned you have NAV running. Is the Filesystem AutoProtect turned
on? Try turning it off temporarily...
Since you're the only one who can reliably reproduce the problem, you'll
need to help us determine what causes it, or it won't get fixed.
Oh, another thing I just noticed is that you're putting your local package
directory under the Cygwin root. That's usually not a good idea -- can
you try putting it somewhere else (e.g., use C:\Shareware\Cygwin and
C:\Shareware\CygwinLocal) and going through both the 'Download' and
'Install' steps (your previous email implies that you only tried the
'Download' step with such a setup). FYI, to save time, you can simply
move/rename the local package directory instead of deleting it -- that way
setup won't re-download everything...
