That's because I just fixed it.  When I tried this earlier, there were all
sorts of errors during the checkout.  That was a good clue, to me at least,
that something was wrong.

It shouldn't matter.

Right.  cvs update is your friend.  Before you report a bug, it makes sense
to check to see if the bug has been fixed already.
