win98, command window, ncurses and rxvt

I have been running a cygwin-based program on a Windows 98 machine for a
while now and have been disappointed in the slow speed of writing to a
standard command window with ncurses. So I recently tried rxvt and this
solved the speed problem; output is relatively snappy. Unfortunately, the
curses-based code which I use to check whether a keyboard key has been
pressed doesn't work when I use rxvt.

So at the moment it seems that I can have speed or the ability to check for
key presses but not both. Is there some way to have both with either the
standard win98 window or rxvt?
