Sounds like your /etc/passwd and /etc/group files are out-of-date.
Regenerate them:
$ mkpasswd -l > /etc/passwd
$ mkgroup -l > /etc/group
Unless you are on a Windows domain, in which case you will need other
options to mkpasswd and mkgroup.
