Problem in gdb installation

Yesterday I upgraded by cygwin installation, having previously
installed a version back in November. I got the new setup.exe and
copied it to C:\cygwin as setup-new.exe. I then ran it and downloaded
various of the new/updated packages.
I then reran it to install from the downloaded files, halfway through
this whilst installing gdb (which I hadn't installed before), I got a
message about moving cygwin out of the way.

After this things rapidly deteriorated(!) and I got a large number
of messages about not finding 'X' (usually a single character) until I
eventually killed off the install process.

I then re-downloaded setup, and installed from
the local download successfully (but this time omitted gdb).

I see my old setup has been renamed to c:\cygwin.old-1 but there don't
appear to be any useful files there for diagnosing what happened.
The c:\cygwin contains the following zero length files which date from
when the problem occurred

  -rw-rw-rw- 1 ram everyone 0 Jul 4 09:53 deUnsafeCommands
  -rw-rw-rw- 1 ram everyone 0 Jul 4 09:53 lObjIndexForString
  -rw-rw-rw- 1 ram everyone 0 Jul 4 09:53 NewObj
  -rw-rw-rw- 1 ram everyone 0 Jul 4 09:53 __Tcl_InitMemory

R (not on this email list so cc me if you want me to see the
responses!)
