help with cygbash

I install cygnu bash today and am having trouble with the following:

my usual command files with .com suffix can not be found/executed, even
though
the correct path is in $PATH. It seems that bash only find files with
the .exe suffix.
I did the have NT's PATHEXT env set correctly. So I am wondering if
there is
a way to get around this.

My TERM is set to cygwin, but that sees to cause my usual vi to complain
about
unknown term type. Is there a way to get around this?

Thanks,
