one thing I did to make it work and had no problems ever since is
mount -b c:\gnuwin32\b18\H-i386-cygwin32 /usr
and then set the variables accordingly.

Re graphics: A picture is worth 10K words -- but only those to describe
the picture. Hardly any sets of 10K words can be adequately described
with pictures.
