startx with different displays

Back to my original problem...
I tried startxwin (as suggested by a colleague) and this one accepts to
start XWin on DISPLAY :0
Are all my problems related to startx?
I can see that defaulting to the highest display found in /tmp/.X* seems to
comes from it...
Does anybody use startx with success?
