Blank title bars

For some reason, changes to the title bar text result in a blank title
bar instead until the window loses focus.
For example, a new NEdit window will have a blank title bar until I
click on another window or the desktop. Then the filename appears. If
I modify the file, the title bar becomes blank again; when the window
loses focus the expected text, "filename (modified)", becomes visible.
The same blank title bar happens when switching tabs in NEdit or Eclipse.
According to the About box, the X server is version 1.5.3 (20090222)
Cygwin1.DLL 1005.25.0.0 (1.5.25-cr-0x5f1)
Has anybody seen anything like this? Any ideas?
