"xinit -- -multiwindow" on the other hand works just
fine -
$ xinit -- -multiwindow

Itlooks like a strange timing problem - sometimes I
get startx to work and then it's working. But most of
the time it just hangs. I tried to narrow down the
problem by commenting certain lines in startx. The
strange thing is sometimes it came on after commenting
different lines in startx but it's not reliable.
Any clues ?
thanks
