I see if you have now done this... I downloaded it all and tried to get 
it working, a few questions/issues:
startgnome seems to find its own display unless $display is set... which 
it tries to read from $serverargs
(pointing to .xserverrc). So it is designed to start X itself (in 
contrast to KDE's startkde, which assumes
X is started)
I would like to get startx to start gnome, what should I put in .xinitrc 
(since startgnome doesn't work)?

In any case, I start Gnome using startgnome and it brings up the nice 
splash screen, goes through
everything, says "Starting Panel", then Done. But I get an Error: 
Application "panel" has crashed
due to a fatal error (segmentation fault). This seems to be a problem 
with CORBA. The following
