Ok, I solved it, it took some magic.  Wouldn't it be possible to store
known good xmodmap.* near the FAQ somewhere.  As I read through the mail
archive I saw that both German and French  users had had problems with
getting their keyboards to work properly.  I also had some problems, i
didn't get the one from xkeycaps to work either, but am using one found on
the net no (Finnish/Swedish).  The section on how to enable the xmodmap
would probably benefit from beeing extended a bit too.
