Richard,
I have had no problems running XWin.exe from a (read only) network
drive, connected to an XDMCP (Linux) server. The only trick was to make
sure that a writable /tmp directory exists locally. You can do this
using mount.exe.
It was unclear from your email exactly what you are trying to achieve,
so this may or may not be of any help.
