I don't know about making it the default, but that choice has so many
implications that most people don't think about. Whenever I do a Cygwin
install, the ratio of time I spend thinking about whether I have that choice
right to the display area the choice takes up is quite large. Sometimes I
think it should be on a dialog by itself, with a short statement summarizing
its impact.

Just re-run the Cygwin setup program and select the following at the
Install root directory window:
Default Text File Type = Unix
Install For = Just Me
This will mount the cygwin root directory on a binary mount (in addition
to downloading any newer packages). Then re-run the XFree86 Xinstall.sh
script.
This request occurs so often that I think the Cygwin Setup program should
be changed so that the above options are the default.
