Hi Gert,
I ran into the same problem recently. The problem was in the original
startxwin.bat file, the line launching XWin was faulty, XWin wasn't
starting at all. So it's normal that xterm was reporting the error "Can't
open display", because no X server was running.
I modified that line to look like:
start XWin :0 -ac -screen 0 1152x864x32 -fullscreen
Maybe -ac and -fullscreen aren't really necessary for you to start it.
