I have found an interesting difference when using xterm. For
example the key "cursor left" produces the triple

	ESC [ D

in xterm regardless of the mode (normal, shift, control, alt).

When using an xterm in a Linux X server or under a VNC server,
the xterm bahaves the same, except when pressing the Alt key.
In that case it produces the byte sequence

	ESC ESC [ D

which allows convenient key bindings in a shell. Why does it
not behave that way in XWin?
