Yes, I read that 3 times yesterday - I tried a number of modes 640x480x8,
800x600x16, 800x600x256 and few more. I am also tried running my NT video at
800x600 with 256, 32k, 65k colors. If I lowered the colors to 4 I could at
least get a little dialog that says there was a problem with ...BACK...
something like that. I am pretty sure I did all that I can with what I have.
Is there a log or someother way to determine what has failed?

I updated the Cygwin/XFree86 User's Guide yesterday. Have you read the
short chapters on configuring and using Cygwin/XFree86? I think they were
part of yesterday's update. Start reading (it's really short) at
http://xfree86.cygwin.com/docs/howto/c296.html
