trouble starting up xfree

I've gone through the how-to twice already, downloading the files and
extracting them in the root folder.  Executing startxwin.bat gives me a "Bad
Creation Failed" dialog box after resizing my screen. After clicking okay, I
get a "DirectDrawInit failed"...  I'm 99.999% sure that I have DirectDraw
installed, but I'm not sure how to check.  Is there anything else I could be
missing?
