1) Hvave you mixed, x-servers-v-1.0 from contrib
directory?
2) Make sure you are not missing
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt file?

The error apears in a popup window. And

Is the X-server booting? Are you getting X-desktop or is

Win95/98 are not supported for XWin, dues
to 16 bit crap behind the glorious desktop... it cann handle
surface lock and unclocks
of x-server without crashing
win9x.
