Now that coreutils has moved away from CVS to git, and I'd still like to
track its development, I propose to become the git maintainer. (And sure
enough, Linus really has made comments about git on cygwin, as I found
while researching their mailing list!).
Other distros claim git is stable (even though it is less than two years
old, the fact that git is the dVCS for the Linux kernel is a driving factor :)

setup.hint is as follows:
# setup for git
sdesc: "Fast Version Control System"
ldesc: "Git is popular version control system designed to handle very
large projects with speed and efficiency; it is used mainly for
various open source projects, most notably the Linux kernel. Git falls
in the category of distributed source code management tools, similar
to e.g. GNU Arch or Monotone (or BitKeeper in the proprietary
world). Every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with
full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access
or a central server."
