i think the major problem was that the original programmer had used
the line:

#include <sys/errno.h>

rather than just

#include <errno.h>

and that probably screwed up the search.  i'll fix that later today
and see if that makes the problem go away.  the source used to build
fine under the original cygwin environment but i don't have access to
that environment so i don't know *what* kind of screwy directory
structure it had that allowed this to work.
