Long names question

Is it possible to change the names and paths of the generated tools  
easily?

At the moment it get:
/opt/crosstool/arm-xscale-linux-gnu/gcc-3.4.3-glibc-2.3.5/bin/arm- 
xscale-linux-gnu-gcc

and I'd like something like:
/opt/crosstool/bin/arm-linux-gcc

My understanding is that this change would need to be done before  
configuring / building because gcc et al hard codes paths and names  
into the code?
