FWIW, the gcc team just updated their instructions of how to test gcc on a simulator: http://gcc.gnu.org/simtest-howto.html
Note that these instructions explictly point you to subversions.gnu.org for gcc, and sources.redhat.com for everything else. They have you merge the two into a combined source tree.
Also, these instructions are for newlib targets. And looking at the source code for the simulators (which are in gdb/sim), I see that the ppc simulator only supports statically linked executables.
